Today’s blog is going to be discussing how Senator Marco Rubio has exemplified David Mayhew’s theories and concepts shown in his book “Congress: The Electoral Connection”. David Mayhew , shown below, is a renowned political scientist who is known for his work on the United States Congress. It is clear that Mayhew’s main message is that “members of congress are single-minded seekers of reelection.” Meaning that members of congress have only one goal in mind: getting reelected. As a professor at Yale, David Mayhew has hypothesized that Congressmen work for this reelection through three main modes: position taking, credit claiming, and advertising.   Today's blog is going to be discussing the great state that Marco Rubio represents as senator: Florida ! Census Data According to census.gov , the population of Florida is 21,781,128 as of July 1, 2021. The majority of the population is white non-Hispanic (77.3%), while Hispanics (26.4%) make up another large portion. African Americans come in third at 16.9%.  Of the population, nearly 21% is of the age 65 and above. This ranks them as one of the oldest states in the US. Meanwhile, 19.7% of the population is under the age of 18. Most of the population is located in an urban setting, such as the state's largest cities Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa.  The median income of the population is $55,660.   Childhood and Education On May 28th, 1971, Marco Rubio was born in Miami, Florida . His parents, both Cuban immigrants, had four children. Senator Rubio’s childhood was very typical of a middle-class family. His father worked as a bartender at hotels, while his mother was a stock clerk, maid, and cashier. Senator Rubio believes that this upbringing helped him to understand the concepts of hard work and family, which he brought along with him throughout his political career.  After graduating high school, Senator Rubio went on to attend the University of Florida where he graduated with a degree in political science and then attended the University of Miami Law School where he graduated with his Juris Doctor degree.
