All About Marco Rubio

Childhood and Education

On May 28th, 1971, Marco Rubio was born in Miami, Florida. His parents, both Cuban immigrants, had four children. Senator Rubio’s childhood was very typical of a middle-class family. His father worked as a bartender at hotels, while his mother was a stock clerk, maid, and cashier. Senator Rubio believes that this upbringing helped him to understand the concepts of hard work and family, which he brought along with him throughout his political career.

After graduating high school, Senator Rubio went on to attend the University of Florida where he graduated with a degree in political science and then attended the University of Miami Law School where he graduated with his Juris Doctor degree.

Political Career

Senator Rubio’s time in law steered him to seek an occupation in public service. Soon after graduating, Rubio became a City Commissioner of West Miami. This led to him getting elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 and eventually Speaker in 2006.

Soon after his great run in office, Rubio had a yearning for something far greater than being in the Florida House of Representatives. He wanted to reach a greater audience, an audience that could only be reached through the Senate.

Rubio’s dream would come true in 2010, when he was elected to the Senate. Within the Senate, Rubio has found a plethora of ways to get his voice heard.

According to his committee assignments page, Rubio serves as the Vice Chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence and is Ranking Member of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Democracy, Civilian Security, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues. Additionally, he is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Special Committee on Aging, as well as serving as a member on the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Track Record

Senator Rubio has had his fair share of success within his role as senator. Through his role in the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, Rubio authored the Paycheck Protection Program – an instrumental program that has helped small businesses during COVID-19.

Rubio’s hard work in his role has not gone unnoticed. GovTrack ranked Rubio second among all senators in 2019, while also receiving high marks in 2018 and 2017.

As Rubio continues to be active in his role, his main focus is to protect the American dream. This is due to his upbringing that he claims shaped his political philosophy to this day.
